Peridot: The Gem Born of Fire

Few gemstones have a story as extraordinary as Peridot. Known as the “gem born of fire”, Peridot is one of only two gemstones, alongside Diamond, that forms deep within the Earth’s mantle rather than in the crust. Brought to the surface by volcanic activity and powerful geological forces, Peridot has fascinated people for thousands of years.

Even more remarkable, some Peridot has an extraterrestrial origin. Crystals of Olivine, the mineral from which Peridot forms, have been discovered in rare meteorites, comet dust, and even on the Moon and Mars. These discoveries have earned Peridot a reputation as one of the most extraordinary gemstones found on Earth.

Peridot is the gem quality variety of Olivine, a magnesium iron silicate mineral. Unlike many gemstones that occur in a range of colours, Peridot is found in only one colour family, from bright yellow green and lime green through to rich olive green. The most highly prized stones display a vibrant olive green with exceptional clarity and brilliance.

Ancient cultures associated Peridot with the sun and believed it offered protection from darkness and negative energies. Egyptian priests treasured the gemstone, while many civilisations wore Peridot as a talisman for good fortune, strength, and prosperity.

Today, Peridot continues to be valued for its fresh green colour and uplifting energy. It is often associated with personal growth, renewal, abundance, and emotional balance. Many believe it encourages confidence, compassion, and the release of old emotional patterns, helping the wearer move forward with clarity and purpose.

Peridot is the modern birthstone for August and is associated with the zodiac signs Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Scorpio.

Caring for Peridot Jewellery

Peridot has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for jewellery but requiring a little extra care. While durable enough for regular wear, it can be scratched by harder materials and may be susceptible to stress fractures if knocked.

To care for Peridot jewellery:

• Store separately from harder gemstones.
• Clean with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush.
• Avoid harsh chemicals and acidic cleaners.
• Remove jewellery before heavy physical activities.

With proper care, Peridot jewellery can be enjoyed and treasured for generations.

At TFD Jewellery, I love working with Peridot for its vibrant colour, fascinating geological story, and connection to transformation and growth. Every stone is a reminder that some of nature’s greatest treasures begin their journey deep within the Earth before emerging as something truly extraordinary.
