Ammonite Jewellery: Ancient Fossils Reimagined in Sterling Silver
Few natural treasures capture the imagination quite like an Ammonite.
These remarkable fossils once belonged to marine creatures that lived in Earth's oceans millions of years ago, long before the dinosaurs disappeared. Today, their beautifully preserved spiral forms continue to fascinate collectors, fossil enthusiasts, crystal lovers, and jewellery collectors around the world.
My Signature Ammonite Collection combines the ancient beauty of these fossils with colourful gemstone inlays, handcrafted sterling silver, and traditional sand casting techniques to create jewellery that feels both timeless and contemporary.
A Fossil Millions of Years in the Making
Ammonites were marine molluscs that thrived in the world's oceans for more than 300 million years. Their distinctive spiral shells evolved into countless shapes and sizes before they became extinct approximately 66 million years ago.
Over millions of years, the shells became buried beneath layers of sediment. Minerals gradually replaced the original shell material, preserving these extraordinary fossils and creating the beautiful specimens we admire today.
Every Ammonite carries a story that began millions of years before humans walked the earth.
The Origin of the Name Ammonite
The name Ammonite is derived from Ammon, an ancient Egyptian god who was often depicted with the horns of a ram. The distinctive spiral shape of the fossil closely resembles a ram's horn, giving rise to its name.
Throughout history, these fascinating fossils have been admired for both their beauty and symbolism.
The Meaning and Symbolism of Ammonite
For centuries, Ammonites have been associated with continual change, personal growth, and evolution. Their spiral form reflects the natural cycles of life and the ongoing journey of transformation.
Many people are drawn to Ammonites as symbols of:
• Change and growth
• Spiritual evolution
• Grounding and stability
• Prosperity and abundance
• Perseverance through life's challenges
In crystal and fossil traditions, Ammonites are believed to help draw away stagnant or negative energies. The spiral is often viewed as a natural energetic filter, transforming dense energies into fresh, positive life force energy.
Having existed for millions of years, Ammonites are also regarded as powerful earth healing fossils. It is believed they have absorbed cosmic energies throughout their long history and can help stimulate the life force energy, or Chi, within the body.
Associated with the Root Chakra, Ammonites are believed to encourage grounding, stability, confidence, and a deeper connection to the earth.
Gemstone Inlays and Ancient Beauty
The Ammonites featured in my Signature Collection are carefully stabilised and inlaid with semi precious gemstones, creating a striking contrast between ancient fossil material and vibrant natural colour.
Many of the pieces feature gemstone combinations including Turquoise, Lapis Lazuli, Coral, Malachite, and other carefully selected materials that complement the natural spiral of the fossil.
The combination of fossil and gemstone creates jewellery that celebrates both the history of the earth and the beauty of natural minerals. Each piece is unique, ensuring no two designs are ever exactly alike.
The colourful inlays highlight the intricate chambers and natural structure of the Ammonite while adding a contemporary artistic element to these ancient fossils.
Handcrafted in Sterling Silver
Every piece in my Signature Ammonite Collection is handcrafted in my Noosa Hinterland studio on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
Using sterling silver and traditional silversmithing techniques, I create jewellery that showcases the natural beauty of each fossil. Many designs incorporate sand cast sterling silver elements created using Delft clay casting methods, adding texture, character, and individuality to every piece.
The result is jewellery that combines ancient history with modern craftsmanship.
A Piece of Ancient Earth
There is something extraordinary about wearing a fossil that has survived for millions of years.
Each Ammonite carries the story of an ancient ocean, the passage of time, and the incredible forces of nature that preserved it. Combined with handcrafted sterling silver and carefully selected gemstones, these fossils become wearable works of art with meaning, beauty, and history.
My Signature Ammonite Collection celebrates the meeting of ancient wisdom and modern craftsmanship, transforming remarkable fossils into jewellery designed to be treasured for generations.
