The Story Behind My Signature Bacon Opal & Turquoise Collection
From Utah to the Noosa Hinterland
Bacon Opal is one of the rarest materials featured in my jewellery collections. Found only in Utah's Thomas Mountain Range, this remarkable stone is prized for its natural landscape-like patterns and earthy colours. Combined with vibrant Turquoise and transformed into handcrafted cabochons, each stone tells a unique story long before it reaches my workbench.
The Bacon Opal and Turquoise cabochons featured in my Signature Collection are created by American lapidary artist Tim Barney of Reshape Nature.
Working with rare Bacon Opal sourced from Utah's Thomas Mountain Range, Tim carefully combines the natural opal with Turquoise inlay before stabilising, cutting, and polishing each cabochon by hand. This specialised process enhances the durability of the material while preserving the remarkable landscape-like patterns that make Bacon Opal so distinctive.
Bacon Opal is a form of Hyalite Opal found in the Thomas Mountain Range of Utah, USA. Unlike traditional precious opal known for its play of colour, Bacon Opal is treasured for its natural earthy patterns, scenic landscape formations, and unique character. These rare deposits are only found in limited locations, making Bacon Opal highly sought after by collectors, lapidaries, and jewellery lovers alike.
The vibrant blues and greens of the Turquoise create a striking contrast against the warm earthy tones of the Bacon Opal, highlighting the beauty of both natural materials. Many of the stones resemble miniature desert landscapes, mountain ranges, or distant horizons, making each cabochon a unique work of art in its own right.
Turquoise has been valued for thousands of years across many cultures and is traditionally associated with protection, balance, wisdom, and tranquillity. Combined with the unique character of Bacon Opal, the result is a gemstone that feels both grounded and timeless.
Because each cabochon is individually handcrafted and every piece of Bacon Opal is naturally different, no two stones are ever exactly alike. Each cabochon is truly one of a kind before it even reaches my workbench, where it is transformed into a handcrafted sterling silver piece as part of my Signature Bacon Opal and Turquoise Collection.
