Here's a more detailed look:

  • Time Period:
The production of Chinese export silver spanned roughly from the late 18th century to the early 20th century.
  • Purpose:
These silver items were made for export, catering to the tastes of Western buyers, particularly in Europe and North America.
  • Materials and Techniques:
  • The silver was often sourced from melted Spanish trade dollars, which were the only currency accepted by Chinese merchants from foreign traders.
  • The silver pieces often featured European-inspired forms and designs in the early periods, but later developed a unique style with Chinese motifs and techniques.
  • Common techniques included casting, chasing, engraving, and repoussé.
  • Collectors' Market:
Chinese export silver is highly sought after by collectors, and the market is guided by the tastes of American, Asian, and European buyers.
