Vintage Ranleigh A1 Silver Plated Ornate Serving Tray 46cm

A beautiful and substantial piece of vintage Australian silverware by Ranleigh Ware Pty Ltd of South Australia.

Measuring an impressive 46cm x 33cm, this large oval serving tray features intricate floral and scrolling foliate decoration across the entire surface, finished with a decorative central cartouche and beautifully detailed raised gadrooned border.

Ranleigh Ware was an Australian manufacturer known for producing quality silver plated tableware and entertaining pieces during the mid twentieth century. Their silverware was widely sold throughout Australia and was also exported internationally.

The original purple and silver Ranleigh A1 Quality Silverware label remains attached to the underside of the tray.

A1 Quality

The A1 designation is an important feature of this piece. A1 was traditionally used on silver plated wares to indicate a higher quality grade of electroplating. The tray is not solid sterling silver, but silver plate over a base metal.

The elaborate decoration is particularly beautiful, with flowers, leaves, scrolls and classical ornamental details creating an almost tapestry like surface. The raised patterned border gives the tray a wonderfully substantial and elegant appearance.

This is a genuine vintage piece and carries the signs of its age and history. There is surface scratching, tarnish, spotting and areas of wear to the silver plating, particularly through the central area. These characteristics have been photographed clearly and form part of the vintage character of the piece.

I have deliberately not attempted to over restore the tray as I love the aged character and patina it has developed over time.

A striking piece for a vintage, eclectic or collected interior. It would make a beautiful display for jewellery, crystals, perfume bottles, candles and other collected treasures, or could still be used as a traditional serving or drinks tray.
