Australian Lightning Ridge Opal Pendant in Sculpted Vintage Silver

This one of a kind pendant began with a piece of rough Lightning Ridge opal that I cut, shaped and polished by hand.

The 6.25 carat natural Australian opal displays beautiful flashes of blue, violet, green and aqua as it moves through the light.

I set the opal in decorative fine silver gallery wire on a backplate created from the bowl of a vintage 900 silver spoon. The natural ripples and folds formed while working the vintage silver became part of the finished design, giving the pendant its wonderfully organic texture and character.

The oxidised finish brings out the sculptural details while allowing the opal to remain the centrepiece. Sterling silver rings connect the pendant to a 45 cm made in Italy sterling silver chain.

From rough opal to finished jewellery, every stage was completed by me in my Pomona studio.
