Rolph Scarlett (1891–1984)
Modernist Silver & Green Stone Pendant
Woodstock, New York | Circa 1954–1976
A museum-level example of American modernist studio jewellery attributed to Rolph Scarlett — the Canadian-born abstract painter and designer whose works are held in the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
During the 1950s through the 1970s, while living in Woodstock, Scarlett produced a limited body of sculptural silver jewellery distinguished by bold geometric abstraction and architectural dimensionality. His pieces echo the visual language of his paintings — rhythmic circles, industrial structure, and controlled modernist tension.
This pendant is a commanding and highly sculptural example.
Crafted in heavy 835 silver, the form presents as a sweeping crescent shield, pierced at the apex and constructed with layered circular elements set with matte green cabochon stones. The dimensionality is exceptional, rising nearly 1 cm in depth, creating dramatic presence when worn.
The abstract composition is unmistakably mid-century modern with a strong constructivist sensibility. The reverse is stamped 835, consistent with Scarlett’s known silver purity.
Though unsigned, the scale, construction, aesthetic vocabulary and estate provenance align closely with documented Scarlett studio works.

Why choose vintage pieces?
When investing in vintage pieces, you're investing in something that will only grow in value, which you know is higher quality than fast-fashion products.
The pieces we sell are vintage, so they may present marks of the passage of time. Make sure you have a close look at the photos of each product. We try to capture them as accurately as possible. Colors may differ slightly.
Sold as-is, please check photos carefully. Some items will display wear consistent with age and use. Gemstones have not been graded for colour and clarity and tested for clarity and colour enhancement unless stated otherwise.
As with any vintage items, pieces may have some signs of wear such as surface scratches, small chips, dings, or may have a patina that can easily be removed. Any medium to major damage such as cracked stones or dents will be noted in the description if known.
It is the buyers' responsibility to view each image and preview the item to determine the condition.
